Question 1

Did Batman use Venom?

Accepted Answer

No, he did not use Venom, a super-steroid. It is confirmed to be adrenaline in the ''The Art of The Batman'' book.

Question 2

Is there any real proof that Falcone killed Bruce's parents or was it really just being in the "wrong place at the wrong time," like Alfred said?

Accepted Answer

The real killer's identity is unknown, and the mysteries of his parents' past haunt Bruce.

Question 3

Who was the guy at the funeral that attempted to talk to Bruce Wayne?

Accepted Answer

He's credited as "Bitter Nobody". Some theorize that he is Joe Chill, the man that killed Bruce's parents, but more likely he just represents the many people left behind in poverty in Gotham.

Question 4

Why isn't J.K. Simmons returning as Commissioner Gordon?

Accepted Answer

The reason J.K. Simmons isn't returning as Commissioner Gordon is because The Batman has been removed from the DCEU and Matt Reeves is taking his own approach, much like Christopher Nolan took his own approach on the character with Batman Begins. Robert Pattinson's Batman is not in the DCEU or any other universe other than its own. Jeffery Wright plays Commissioner Gordon in this film.

Question 5

Is The Riddler supposed to be a serial killer in this Batman film?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Think John Doe from Seven or the Zodiac killer.

Question 6

Who created the character of Batman? Bob Kane is listed in old (pre-2015) media including the comic books as creating Batman on his own but new media (made after 2015) shows him as co-creating the character with someone called Bill Finger, so what's all that about?

Accepted Answer

It's a long story so here goes....After the success of the comic book Superhero Superman, artist Bob Kane tried to come up with his own hero "The Bat-Man", the character Kane created wore a red suit with a domino mask, blonde hair and a pair of bat wings. Kane then asked for writer Bill Finger's assistance on the project. Finger rejected several of Kane's initial ideas about the character and suggested several changes in design and characterization. His changes included changing his hair colour, a black colour scheme for the costume, adding a cape and cowl, the idea that he shouldn't have any superpowers, his civilian identity of Bruce Wayne (which Finger named after Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland and general Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne), the origin story about his parents being shot in an alley and the idea that he should also be a detective.Kane marketed the "Batman" character to National Comics, and Batman's first story was published in "Detective Comics" #27 (May 1939). The script was written by an uncredited Finger, making him the first of many ghost writers to work on comics officially credited to Bob Kane. When Kane negotiated a contract about selling the rights to the "Batman" character, he claimed he was the sole creator and demanded a sole mandatory byline acknowledging him as such on all comics and adaptations. Out of fairness, Kane agreed to pay Finger his share with money out of his earnings. Unfortunately, the agreement was never put into writing, and Finger never saw a cent.Finger would go on to ghost write Batman stories up into the mid 1960's, either with Kane or for DC Comics directly. During his writing tenure, Finger was responsible for the unaccredited creation of many key players and pieces in the Batman universe. These included the Batmobile, the Batcave, Gotham City, and Batman's nickname "The Dark Knight". He also came up with several secondary Batman characters including, his sidekick Robin, his arch-nemesis The Joker, and his occasional love interest Catwoman, as well as Commissioner Gordon, The Riddler and The Scarecrow. Despite all of this, the only writing credit that Finger received for Batman in his lifetime were two episodes of Batman (1966), The Clock King's Crazy Crimes (1966) and The Clock King Gets Crowned (1966) which he co-wrote with friend Charles Sinclair.Eventually, the truth did come out. Finger attended the first official New York Comic Con in 1965 and sat on a panel with other comic book creators where he revealed the role he played in Batman's creation. Finger's story gained exposure in a two-page article titled "If the truth be known, or a Finger in every plot!," written and distributed by pop culturist Jerry Bails. Kane caught wind of Finger's appearance not long after and replied in the form of a printed letter to Batman fan magazine, "Batmania," where he labeled his old friend a fraud. Finger, who by this time was deeply in debt, continued to write for various projects in and outside of comic books until his death in 1974, when he was found alone in his apartment by friend Charles Sinclair. Finger died penniless and his contributions to the character were never acknowledged in his lifetime. However, after the popularity of Tim Burton's Batman (1989), Kane acknowledged Finger as "a contributing force" in the character's creation, and wrote in his 1989 autobiography "Batman and Me" that "Now that my long-time friend and collaborator is gone, I must admit that Bill never received the fame and recognition he deserved. He was an unsung hero ... I often tell my wife, if I could go back fifteen years, before he died, I would like to say. 'I'll put your name on it now. You deserve it.'"Many failed attempts were made over the years by Finger's family to get him recognition for his work, including a request from his second wife Lyn Simmons to have his name listed in the credits of Tim Burton's Batman (1989).Finger remained largely unknown, even to Batman fans, until writer Marc Tyler Nobleman began investigating the late author's life for a book being written about him called "Bill the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman". Nobleman went in search of Finger's family to help fill in the gaps and give him credit. While Finger's autopsy report claimed no relatives were present, Nobleman discovered that Finger had a son, Fred.Unfortunately, Fred, who was an outspoken proponent of his father, had died in 1992. Nobleman learned that Fred was also homosexual, leading him to believe that Fred had no children before his death. The trail was starting to go cold. However, after receiving new information from Finger's nephew, Nobleman discovered Fred indeed had a daughter, Athena Finger, who was born two years after Finger's death. Nobleman met with Athena and convinced her to meet with DC about getting recognition for her grandfather. DC in turn welcomed Athena with open arms, cut her a check and invited her to the premiere of The Dark Knight (2008) with all expenses paid. It wasn't until around 2012 that DC offered her more money. This time, however, she had to sign away her rights to her grandfather's claim. With encouragement from Nobleman, Athena rejected the money and took DC to court. It took years of litigation before a settlement was reached. A major turning point in the case was the unearthing of recorded interviews with Bob Kane during the writing of his autobiography. During one of the interviews, Tom Andrae, Kane's co-writer, asked Kane to what extent Finger contributed to Batman's creation. "Bill was responsible for 50 to 75 percent," Kane bluntly responded. Finally, in September 2015, DC Entertainment issued a statement informing the public that Finger would be listed as co-creator on any piece of Batman media henceforth. Starting with the superhero film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and the second season of Gotham (2014), an updated acknowledgement for the character appeared as "Batman created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger".Finger's story was later used as the subject of the Hulu original documentary, Batman & Bill (2017).

Question 7

Why did they make Robert's Pattinson's Batman look somewhat gothic?

Accepted Answer

The film shows Batman to be in his second year of crime fighting, thus his equipment still looks makeshift, that is, it seems he will change his armour and gadgets in the future films. This is the reason why the current Batmobile is also a muscle car with a big exhaust pipe in the rear. He will change everything as time progresses.Incidentally, Batman's cowl and the protective-type collar at the top of his cape seem to be modeled on the ensemble Batman wore in Gotham By Gaslight, a one-off graphic novel released in 1989 where Batman searches for Jack the Ripper in Gotham in 1889.

Question 8

Why did the director decide to make Robert Pattinson's Batman story start from his "second year" as Batman and skip how he became Batman his first year?

Accepted Answer

We can assume this is because Batman's origin has been done to death at this point (much like how the Spiderman Origin was skipped over in the MCU), this film is focusing on Batman really coming into his own as a detective.

Question 9

Why does the Batman logo look so different on Pattinson's torso?

Accepted Answer

An early fan theory was that it was made from the gun that killed Bruce's parents; however, in the film it is as a batterang, one of Batman's chief weapons in the character's mythos over the decades. Batman also uses it as a device to cut through tape and wire. Also, the Batman emblem has been changed every time there's a new production involving the character. It's a way for producers and directors to put their own brand on the character.

Question 10

Andy Serkis's Alfred appears to have a scar in the trailer, is it possible he got it from the Riddler?

Accepted Answer

No. Alfred is often written as having a past in the military. So he was likely wounded in combat when he was younger. His mention of "the Circus" is likely a reference to work with the British intelligence services.

Question 11

Which characters were adapted from the Batman comic books?

Accepted Answer

Note: For this list only the creators of the characters first appearances are listed. As with all comic book characters, Batman and his supporting cast have had several reinventions and different contributions from different writers. Theses include different iterations in different mediums that all have added different concepts to the overall mythology of the characters.Obviously, there's Bruce Thomas Wayne/Batman called only Bruce Wayne or Batman on screen. He made his first appearance in the comic story "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" from Detective Comics #27 (May 1939) by writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane.Selina Kyle/Catwoman, only called Selina Kyle on screen. In her first comic appearance, she was called "The Cat" and appeared in a story of the same name in Batman #1 (Spring 1940) by writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane.Gotham City Police Department Lieutenant Jim Gordon, in the comics his full name is James Worthington Gordon. Sr. Just like Batman he made his first appearance in the the comic story "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate" from Detective Comics #27 (May, 1939) by writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane. The Penguin, whose real name in the comics is Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot. He made his first appearance in the comic story "One of the Most Perfect Frame-Ups" from Detective Comics #58 (December 1941) by writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane. The Riddler, whose real name in this version is Edward Nashton. He made his first appearance in the comic story "The Riddler" from Detective Comics #140 (October 1948) by writer Bill Finger and artist Dick Sprang.Carmine "The Roman" Falcone, who made his first appearance in the comic story "Batman: Year One (Part I of IV): Who I Am - How I Come to Be" from Batman #404 by writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli.Gotham City Police Chief Mackenzie Bock and Gotham Police Commissioner Pete Savage, are algamations of comic book characters Commissioners Gillian B. Loeb and Peter Grogan. Commissioner Gillian B. Loeb, made is first appearance in the comic story "Batman: Year One (Part I of IV): Who I Am - How I Come to Be" from Batman #404 by writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli, whilst Commissioner Peter Grogan made his first appearance in the comic story "Catwoman: Year One" from Catwoman Annual #2 (July 1995) and was created by writer Frank Miller and artist Jordan B. Gorfinkel.

Question 12

Did the producers secure trademark/copyright for "Catwoman", else why is "Catwoman" never uttered in the film itself or listed as a character in the credits?

Accepted Answer

Warner Bros. Owns the rights to all DC properties. So there is no concern about using the name "Catwoman" legally. It's possible the writers found it cheesy for this film. Also, it's possible that this is early in her career, so she has not adopted the persona/name of Catwoman yet. As we see, she wears a stealthy black suit and a ski mask with pointy sides. But it's hardly a proper costume.

Question 13

How old is Bruce Wayne in this movie?

Accepted Answer

Robert Pattinson was 35, but this film is still in the early days of Batman. So he's likely supposed to be in his late 20s to 30.

Question 14

What was the point of Batman beating up criminals only to let them run off freely?

Accepted Answer

To inspire fear and to spread the word that he is out there. His goal was to save an innocent man from being beaten or perhaps murdered by the thugs. Batman has no legal authority to arrest criminals, given he is a criminal vigilante himself.

Question 15

Is the Riddler design from the comics or is it an original design?

Accepted Answer

The color green, is indeed from the comics but the rest is an original design that is also inspired by the Zodiac killer's appearence.

Question 16

Was the young criminal at the beginning with the half makeup a nod to 2 Face?

Accepted Answer

It could be a smart nod/easter egg. But the reason behind it, is that this particular gang member has not completed his initiation which requires him to have killed someone. His fellow gang members are forcing him to take the kill and complete his initiation which would grant him a full face make-up like all the other gang members.

Question 17

What is Gordon's rank in this movie?

Accepted Answer

Lieutenant. He wasn't yet promoted to commissioner.

Question 18

Was Batman always a dark and brooding character or did that only happened after "The Dark Knight Returns" graphic novel?

Accepted Answer

Modern portrayals of Batman as the brooding Dark Knight owe a lot of Frank Miller's 1986 mini-series/graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns", but those roots go back to the very beginning with his introduction in 1939. Bill Finger and Bob Kane wrote the character in the manner of pulp mysteries and noir films. If anything, Batman's disregard for criminals dying in his path made him even more remorseless than he later became, if only slightly. But the lighter, goofier tone crept in quickly with the early introduction of Robin (1940) and themed, often comical supervillains like the Penguin (1941) and the Riddler (1948). By the 1950s, Batman stories had left their pulp roots behind and dealt with wacky sci-fi shenanigans just as much as Superman. There are historical reasons for this (changing tastes in comic fans, the comic scare of the 50s), and Batman wasn't any different from the few super hero titles that survived comics' Silver Age.In the early 60s DC editor Julius Schwarz attempted to take Batman in a more serious direction, but these efforts were derailed by the popularity of the campy Batman TV show starring Adam West. Once that show ended, writer Denny O'Neil took Batman back to his darker origins, famous recreating Gotham City as "Manhattan below 14th street at eleven minutes past midnight on the coldest night in November," with an equally gritty Batman to match. From that point on, that characterization stuck. So Frank Miller may have taken the vengeful Dark Knight version of Batman to a new level with "The Dark Knight Returns", but the character leaned that way originally and had already been shifted back nearly two decades before it's release.

Question 19

Why does Selina need to get Annika's passport to escape Gotham? Gotham is just a city in America.

Accepted Answer

With no money, and probably no visa or work permit, Annika wouldn't get on very well in the rest of America, and going back to her home country is probably her safest option. Also, case the mayor had just been murdered, that meant the cops were going to start snooping around and asking questions. So maybe Selina wanted to get the passport back to destroy any evidence that would link Annika to him so that she wouldn't get involved with the corruption the mayor was caught up in.

Question 20

Who are the villains of the film?

Accepted Answer

The main villain is The Riddler (Paul Dano), but Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) and Oz (Colin Farrell) are also antagonists.

Question 21

Why is it called THE Batman?

Accepted Answer

It's an alternate take on the Batman character, there is already a film called just Batman (89) and Batman 2022 sounds cheesy, so The Batman is more appropriate because it features more Batman than Burton/Schumacher/Nolan batman films, plus the makes it stylish,

Question 22

What was Ben Affleck's Batman movie going to be like?

Accepted Answer

While the majority of the details or the official script haven't been made public, there is a fair amount of information on wikipedia (which should be treated with caution as anyone and presumably edit that site) about what Ben Affleck's Batman solo-outing film would have been.According to The Batman's director, Matt Reeves, the Affleck Batman film would have been more like a James Bond movie than his own Noir Detective take on Batman. It was to be presumably set after Zack Snyder's Justice League and would have featured Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke the Terminator/Slade Wilson (who is revealed to have some personal grudge and history with Batman and Bruce Wayne in the scene with Lex Luthor). Also, Arkham Asylum was to play a major role in Affleck's movie and there would have been a massive (and, presumably, violent) fight scene in the streets of Gotham between Batman and Deathstroke. Reportedly, Carla Gugino (a frequent collaborator of Zack Snyder's) would have played Selina Kyle/Catwoman, as well, and Carrie Kelley would become the next Robin. To the best of this poster's knowledge, the closest comparison in previous DC Media to Affleck's script would probably have been Season Two of Arrow, which famously involves a vengeful Slade Wilson becoming Deathstroke and trying to pick apart Team Arrow using dangerous allies.

Question 23

What kind of motorcycle does Bruce Waye-Batman drive in this movie? And what kind does Selina Kyle-Catwoman drive?

Accepted Answer

The cycle that Batman rides isn't any official model, it was designed from scratch and custom built according to the IMCDB dot org website.Selina's cycle is, according to the same website, a 2021 BMW R nineT Highway Fighter.

Question 24

Is Christopher Nolan producing this project?

Accepted Answer

No. Nolan confirmed in July 2012 that he will not produce a Batman reboot film or a Justice League (2017) movie. When asked about this while promoting The Dark Knight Rises (2012), he replied, "We're finished with all we're doing with Batman. This is the end of our take on this character."

Question 25

How did Bruce know that Catwoman's name is Selina?

Accepted Answer

He saw the bank's letter/notice in her house which revealed to Batman both her name and that she has money problems with the danger of losing her house.

Question 26

Why did Selina leave Gotham at the end?

Accepted Answer

She overcame her vengeaful tendencies thanks to Batman. With Falcone now dead and with everything that's going on in Gotham after the Riddler's masterplan, she decides to leave the city alongside with her past behind and start from scratch. She could have stayed for Batman's sake but their different perspectives and agendas make her realise that they're on different paths. She will probably return but at the end of the movie, it was pretty clear to her that now is the time for a fresh start away from the city that gave birth to all her former demons.

Question 27

Where did Riddler get all of his henchmen from? And how was he able to rig everything to blow up the dams in the first place?

Accepted Answer

The Riddler has been using social media for a considerable amount of time with his followers being lower class citizens of Gotham that felt betrayed and wronged by the system due to the city's corruption and unfair wealth distribution. His masterplan is possible because in Matt Reeves' version of Gotham, the water level around the island is big enough and the city requires dams to keep the water at bay. The Riddler blew up seven parts of the dam using explosives in vans resulting in the flood at the end of the film. The explosives were probably triggered by him right after he sniped Falcone. That would give him enough time to be caught and be transferred to Arkham and have his long awaited face off with his idol, The Batman.

Question 28

According to Batman, the Mayor was alive when Riddler removed his thumb, but he had all fingers intact right as Riddler bludgeoned him to death. It doesn't add up.

Accepted Answer

It is implied that the Riddler did not kill the mayor when he hammered him with the carpentry tool which means that he was still unconsious after the hits. That means, he died of asphyxiation as a result of the Riddler taping his face. Between the opening scene and his eventual asphyxiation, the Riddler cut off his thumb off-screen.

Question 29

Riddler tells Batman that he needed him to bring Falcone to the light so he could be shot but couldn't he just have shot him at any other point?

Accepted Answer

It is revealed in the first conversation, Bruce had with Falcone that years ago, Falcone was shot in the chest resulting in Thomas Wayne saving his life. That event probably made him overcautious and paranoid forcing him to take extreme measures. Falcone also says that the Mayor's funeral forced Gotham's other most reclusive individual, Bruce Wayne to get out of his house and out in the public which confirms the idea Falcone rarely gets out of his penthouse, if ever and Bruce is also surpriced to see him in public highlighting the notion Falcone is indeed a well known recluse. That's why it's hard for Riddler to snipe him at any moment. Plus, the Riddler wants to both kill Falcone and expose the corruption in Gotham that is strictly connected to him which means that he wants to kill him at the right time alongside his reputation. For that reason, the Riddler uses the thumb-drive to expose the Mayor's connection to the Iceberg Lounge and Selina's girlfriend on the interner, forcing Falcone to make his move that will allow him to unmask the origin of Gotham's corruption which Gordon and Batman perfectly do by using Anika's phone call to Selina. Riddler is setting up the dominos and observes how they will fall and when the time comes, he snipes Falcone having completed his masterplan with Batman's aid.

Question 30

Is Bruce Wayne crazy because of his mother?

Accepted Answer

Possibly; he is a depressed, nihilistic and self destructive loner who is still traumatized by the brutal murder of his parents that he witnessed as a 10-year old. Going out at night and using violence as a means to an end is his way of making sense out of his life. It is a very realistic portrayal of Bruce Wayne's deranged psychological world that was always romanticised and toned down in previous iterations. Some mental illnesses are partially hereditary, such as schizophrenia, and the idea of mental illness as a hereditary 'family curse' was common in older media.

Question 31

What was Riddler's ultimate plan anyways? The flooding wasn't even enough to drown the city.

Accepted Answer

The Riddler wanted to flood a certain part of the city after the elections so that the key political figures of Gotham would be forced to go inside the building that the final battle is taking place to protect themselves from the flood. There, the Riddler's comrades would kill all the high profile political figures of Gotham easily -- think of the "like a fish in a barrel" cliché. He doesn't want to flood the entire city and by the film's climax, it is shown that not all of Gotham is flooded, although, the extension of the city's flooding is not thoroughly displayed. But considering the national guard is on its way, it's safe to assume that a considerable or at least important part of the city has been flooded.

Question 32

Does the Riddler know who Bruce Wayne is, or was he just messing with Batman during his interrogation?

Accepted Answer

No. Riddler didn't know Bruce Wayne was Batman. When Batman and Riddler meet, Riddler starts saying "Bruce Wayne" repeatedly. Batman, fearing that Riddler had learned his identity and essentially "outed him", but as Riddler continues to speak about Bruce, he then says "he's the only one (of my victims) that we didn't get." Revealing that Riddler just saw Bruce Wayne as a target and not the true identity of his idol, Batman. Batman also gives a look of relief as well. Not to mention, Riddler did send a bomb to Bruce Wayne, which almost killed Alfred. If Riddler knew that Batman was Bruce Wayne, his idol. He wouldn't have sent the bomb.

Question 33

Why did Batman feel so shocked when the woman at the end of the film placed her hands on his arm?

Accepted Answer

Because for the entrirety of the film, he has been operating in the shadows with vengeance and the use of violence against criminals as some sort of psychotherapy being his only goals. Fear, is his ultimate and only tool and the guy he saves from the skull gang at the beginning of the film who tells him "Please, don't hurt me." represents the way the majority of the city's people view him. When he decides to become a symbol of hope at the end of the film and save those people, he is shocked to realise that he was actualy accepted by the people of Gotham as a hero and that inspiring hope in the city's citizents can be more powerful and maybe effective than just inspiring fear in the hearts of his enemies. It's his wake up call and that's why he feels so shocked by the woman's reaction.

Question 34

Be honest, who dies in this movie because of Batman?

Accepted Answer

In a way, everyone who dies in the film, dies because of Batman cause he inspired the Riddler in the first place. But that is a very wrong and flawed logic to approach this question because we all live in an interconnected world and simply because we influence certain events or people, doesn't also mean we are responsible for other people's actions; like trying to blame movies, music or video games for individuals deciding to commit a crime. Batman doesn't kill anyone in the film and therefore he is not directly or even indirectly responsible for any death.

Question 35

Why does Penguin seem so happy when the "rat" is killed?

Accepted Answer

Because with the "rat" dead, he is now able to ascend in Gotham's oraganised crime machine and maybe strive towards taking the "rat's" place which would make him one of the most powerful individuals in Gotham. Plus, Oz is someone who has a code of honor which he lays out when he says to Batman and Gordon that he is no rat, a very admirable quality in the gangster world. When he finds out who the "rat" is and where he comes from, he justifiably feels betrayed giving him another reason to be overjoyous with the "rat's" death.

Question 36

Are there any other superhero/super villains hinted in this movie?

Accepted Answer

Both Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson have revealed that they're not interested with other DC characters and superheroes entering their "The Batman" universe considering they want to do a very standalone, Batman driven and grounded/realistic world. There is however, a small cameo, easter egg type of appearence from a certain Batman villain. It doesn't necesarily mean he'll be in the sequel cause Matt wanted to expand the backstory of his Batman world and Batman characters so, it's more worldbuilding than it is sequel bate. But yes, there is one Batman villain making an obscure appearence which might tease what's to come.

Question 37

Was Selina a child born from rape?

Accepted Answer

Possibly, but given that Selina's mother was one of Falcone's employees in the club (I.e. a prostitute), Falcone likely just frequently had sex with her and got her pregnant at some point.

Question 38

Was that really the Riddler on the video chat or was it just one of his goons pretending to be him?

Accepted Answer

It was indeed the Riddler aka Edward Nashton.

Question 39

Who even runs Wayne Enterprise since it doesn't look like Bruce is present?

Accepted Answer

The film doesn't show us any people that work at Wayne Enteprises. The people who run it, are the shareholders who are members of the board. In the "Zero Year" storyline from the comics, Bruce Wayne's uncle and Martha Wayne's brother, Philip Kane, runs the company. In "The Batman" however, we do not know any characters who work there or if Philip Kane exists in Matt Reeve's world (if he did, he would be renamed Philip Arkham due to the film retconning Martha Wayne's family tree).

Question 40

Why did Bruce Wayne not go through with his father's philanthropy?

Accepted Answer

Presumably he was too young to take an active part in the business, and was more interested in his work as the Batman.

Question 41

How can Thomas Wayne be so naive as to believe Falcone will not kill the journalist? Falcone is a mob boss.

Accepted Answer

Well if you tell a guy to scare somebody, thats all you expect them to do. Thats's a pretty reasonable thing to assume. But ultimately, Thomas Wayne was desperate. And in desperate situations we don't always think things out clearly. In the scene where the Riddler exposed the story of Bruce's parents legacy, the Riddler said Thomas Wayne had attempted to bribe the reporter, but the reporter refused. Which meant Thomas had to resort to more desperate measures. Maybe Thomas Wayne thought fear would be enough and didn't expect things would have to go any further.

Question 42

Does the Riddler kill people in the comic too or is it only in this film?

Accepted Answer

Riddler is a bit differently depicted in this film than he is usually depicted in the comics. In the comics, he is Edward Nygma or Edward Nashton (depending on the material), an extremely intelligent man who usually sends out his trademark riddles before he commits his crimes, which usually involve bank robberies. He isn't above threatening people with death to get his way, but usually balks at outright murder and homicide like The Joker would use to make a statement. It should be noted that he almost faded into obscurity in the comics before the Flashpoint event created the New 52. He mostly was a secondary-level villain, but had a great story-arc in the Hush event by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee, where it is revealed at the climax of the comic (after Bruce as Batman watches Harvey Dent shoot Thomas Elliot/Hush and he is thrown off a bridge to his presumed death) that the true mastermind of the Hush storyline was Riddler, who not only orchestrated the impressive revenge storyline of Thomas Elliot, but also deduced finally Batman's identity as Bruce.

Question 43

What did the Riddler do to Batman to make him so upset during their prison meeting? Batman was monotone and expressionless throughout this film before that.

Accepted Answer

1. Riddler found inspiration from the Batman about vigilante justice. This alone can drive the Batman nuts, because his objective was the opposite --> curb violent crime and corruption. This is also in direct violation of Batman's principles against killing or using guns. Probably the first time in the short life of Batman where he has to face the unintended consequences of his actions.
2. The Batman had so far only been on crime scenes after the crime. This seemed like an opportunity for him to get ahead of something.
3. Escalation in scale of violence. The Riddler was clearly prepared to get caught, while leaving behind a big destruction plan. Only Riddler could give Batman a clue about what that might be.
4. The Batman's ultimate approach in his vigilantism was to drive fear into Gotham's criminals. Violence is a big way to do this. The Batman was not emotionless throughout the movie up until then. His ruthless violence (not killing but beating people severely) and extremely risk taking behavior are very evident of his fight with mental health. Imagine the helplessness of knowing something big is coming and he can't save the people (of Gotham) he cares about. --> What would a violent person do when you push them hard?

Question 44

What did Batman mean when he said ecchymosis?

Accepted Answer

Ecchymosis is "a discoloration of the skin resulting from bleeding underneath, typically caused by bruising."
And the reason it's relevant is because it doesn't happen with a wound that occurs after death. It's very strong evidence that the thumb was cut off while he was alive. Though there's some wiggle room if it happened right after death, as all biological functions don't immediately cease with brain death.

Question 45

Falcone is friendly towards Selina Kyle when Wayne is watching through the contact lens. Batman is confused and asks why they know each other and Kyle evades. Later she admits he's her father. However, she later confront Falcone and reveals who her mother was, which is clearly a surprise to him. So why were they familiar earlier? Did he know she was his daughter but not know by whom? Was he flirting with her not knowing she was related?

Accepted Answer

Selina was a waitress and the 40 below club. Falcone knew her from there, not realising her mother was a former employee of his.

Question 46

Was life at the orphanage always terrible, or was it meant to be implied it only became that way after Thomas Wayne's death, due to lack of oversight?

Accepted Answer

It was always terrible. This is partly what fueled The Riddler's plan for revenge, because hope was coming for the orphans, but it got taken away.

Question 47

After Colson gets blown up, and Batman gets knocked out, not one cop bothered to unmask Batman during his transfer to the police precinct before he regained consciousness?

Accepted Answer

Obviously not. They probably wanted to, but were stopped by Gordon. We see the cops attempt to unmask him right before he wakes up and fights them off. Gordon would've continued to keep Bruce's identity secret but he couldn't control the mob of police at that point. And he was probably stalling until Batman regained consciousness.

Question 48

The scene where Batman jumps from the top of a building, was it his first ever "real" jump?

Accepted Answer

Possibly; his failure and mistakes show that he is inexperienced as the Batman and is just starting out on his vigilante career.

Question 49

Is the other patient we see in Arkham Asylum during the closing scenes of the film the Joker?

Accepted Answer

We only see and hear this patient for a short time, but what we see points heavily to yes. We will not really know unless it is addressed in a sequel.

Question 50

Is it possible that Alfred is Bruce Wayne's father?

Accepted Answer

A very unlikely theory, but nonetheless, something to be addressed. There was a subplot in the comics in pre-Flashpoint history where Alfred was hinted to be Bruce Wayne's biological father from a secret affair with Martha Wayne. There is no official evidence, only speculation, in The Batman, that Alfred had a secret affair and love-child with Martha Wayne. Alfred has throughout the majority of Batman comic book history and various other mediums been a surrogate father-figure to Bruce Wayne following the murder of Bruce's parents. It would be an interesting subplot for The Batman movies by Matt Reeves to examine that Alfred is Bruce's biological father and how that would proceed with the plot of the trilogy/series.

Question 51

During the scene where The Riddler is arrested, he has multiple ID cards. Which one is the real one and therefore his real identity?

Accepted Answer

In the comics, The Riddler is famously known as Edward Nygma, or simply E. Nygma (Enigma). In the movie, The Riddler is supposedly named Edward Nashton or Patrick Parker, according to the ID cards. However, it is possible they are fake IDs, and Edward Nashton is not his real name.

Question 52

Is the Riddler attracted to Batman? As in Romantically?

Accepted Answer

He has stated he is a lonely man and during the conversation with Batman in Arkham Asylum, he clearly shows how much he idolizes Batman. It's not a far-fetched conclusion that he has a sexual attraction to him, also. Potentially like the old running gag that The Joker is romantically attracted to Batman.

Question 53

Does the Riddler figure out who Batman's identity is?

Accepted Answer

Possible, but unlikely. He idolizes Batman, but despises Bruce Wayne for taking the spotlight away from the original point of the Renewal Fund that Thomas Wayne established.Since he attempted to kill Bruce half-way through the movie with a mail-bomb that sends Alfred to the hospital, it wouldn't make sense to do that if he already knew who Batman is. During the confrontation between Bruce and Nashton in Arkham, he starts to imply he knows that Batman and Bruce are one and the same, but that's simply a red-herring.

Question 54

Does this movie continue the Batman movie tradition of Selina finding out who Batman is at a climatic moment?

Accepted Answer

Interestingly, no. While famously in 'Batman Returns' and 'The Dark Knight Rises', Selina Kyle's previous cinematic depictions had a moment where she finds out that Bruce Wayne and Batman are one and the same, Selina doesn't in this movie. In fact, she never interacts with Bruce Wayne, just when he is suited up as Batman.Presumably, if Zoe Kravitz returns as Selina Kyle in the sequels to The Batman, her character will learn who Batman is, which should lead to some interesting dialogue definitely, since in several scenes in The Batman she shows heavy disdain for the rich and in one scene, she says Bruce Wayne deserves to get what she thinks he deserves to Batman.

Question 55

Is mayoral candidate Bella Real is a love-interest for Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman?

Accepted Answer

Bella and Bruce have only one scene of interaction in the film and while they are friendly to each other, there is no romantic attraction between them. However, the future is never set. Bruce Wayne might wind up with Bella Real in the eventual sequels.

Question 56

Will there be a sequel?

Accepted Answer

Presumably, yes, since the movie was a financial and critical success and since there is an official entry here on the Internet Movie Database. Plus, director Matt Reeves has confirmed it, too. However, given the recent shake-ups at DC Studios as a result of the Warner Bros merger with Discovery and the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new heads of DC Studios, plus the fact that it has been confirmed that Ben Affleck will return to play Batman/Bruce Wayne in The Flash movie and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, has caused some people to wonder if The Batman will get a sequel or if the next Batman solo movie will be the long-hoped-for solo Batman movie with Ben Affleck going up against Joe Manganiello. It is impossible to tell at this moment, as DC is well-known for playing things close to the chest with their major cinematic productions. James Gunn has hinted in recent interviews (as of 11/29/2022) that Matt Reeves' Batman universe could continue, but there is also speculation that Robert Pattinson is going to be the new Batman for the newly-rebranded DC Cinematic Universe and replace Ben Affleck completely.Time will tell, basically. Either way, Matt Reeves has hinted that his sequel to this movie will be amazing. So that's something to look forward to in 2025.

Question 57

Why did Batman seem so injured after the Riddler Goon shot him with the shotgun? His armour is bullet proof isn't it?

Accepted Answer

Batman's armour is bullet-proof. But taking two 12 gauge shotgun blasts to the chest at point blank range would still be excruciating. The impact likely cracked or broke some of Batman's ribs and certainly knocked the wind out of him. Even if body armor -- the most prominent type is made of a material called Kevlar -- can stop a bullet it's not going to absorb every bit of impact. Many people who are shot at close range while wearing body armor experience some sort of injury like broken or fractured ribs. The material will likely save your life but it's going to hurt! Even a bruised rib -- where the cartilage at the tips of your ribs meets the sternum -- can be VERY painful, an ache that can last for weeks. Imagine if the actual bone is fractured or broken. As an added bonus, if the broken end of bone pokes your lungs that adds to the weakness you're going to feel. Getting shot while wearing Kevlar very much feels like getting shot without it.

Question 58

Does this version of Batman kill people?

Accepted Answer

No. This version of Batman goes out of his way to avoid killing people. At one point he does re-direct the barrel of a rifle from one assailant, causing another assailant to get shot. It's not clear if the one who was shot was killed. But it looks as if he was hit in the shoulder. So he likely survived.
